Hello friends! My name is Amanda Maldonado, one of the newest Style Gurus reporting from the chilly hill that is Syracuse University. This new year is not only bringing me the honor of starting up my first round here on College Fashionista, diving headband first into the ever transforming world that is fashion blogging, but my first semester here at the ‘Cuse as well! I am a transfer student born and raised beneath the sunny rays of southern California, with plans to study film production and journalism.
Finishing my two years at Orange Coast College, a scenic ten minutes from Newport Beach, I became accustomed to the Brandy Melville relaxed style. Having been born straddling the borders of the edgy Los Angeles trends and cool casual style that is the OC, an eclectic style was born at a young age. I would describe my favorites as a relaxed slouchy chic with a crisp collar here and there. I love the idea of a beautiful sequin top with a chunky soft sweater casually thrown over — a casual elegance that would make anyone feel like a million bucks. I say don’t be afraid of silk tops and boyfriend jeans. There are no rules in fashion and if you feel and look amazing, no one will ever second guess you. Style should be an attitude, one that should be worn whether its finals week sweat pants or girls night on the town. And like anyone in the world of fashion, you have to know when to take a risk!
After much debate I decided to join Ottos Army and make the journey on over to New York. But before I could trade in my sandals for snow shoes, I decided it would be best to take the fall semester off to work full time and prepare for the move. Working at Nordstrom full time further developed my knowledge of the brands and designers as well as what customers are really buying and looking for right now. I attended many product knowledge meetings with designers such as Kate Spade and Haute Hippie. I was literally in heaven! Alongside the gorgeous clothing and watching the runway shows of new products, I really saw how one can make these trends wearable and yes, affordable!
Having been approached by a Style Guru previously, I am beyond excited to experience the journey from the inside! I am so excited to be reporting the STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK column to you every week, giving you my take on campus trends from runway to hallway while teaching you how to grow and maintain your fabulous ballin’ on a budget closet. I completely understand that being a fashion interested college student can not always be the easiest balance! I am completely pro the buy-sell-trade stores as well as affordable vintage. Fashion isn’t just about stacks of expensive clothes, it’s all in the styling that makes it memorable. We will see how west really meets east coast style, and the beautiful concoction we can mix of the two!
