STYLE GURU BIO: Allison Ray

Hey there, Fashionistas/os! My name is Allison and I am a senior at the University of Missouri. I am majoring in Textile and Apparel Management with an emphasis in Marketing and Merchandising and a minor in Business. I started college as a Political Science major, switched to Business my sophomore year and finally chose Textile and Apparel Management as a junior when I finally realized the business of fashion was my true passion!

This past spring semester I interned at The Mizzou Store in the general merchandise department. I also served as an executive member for a non-profit student organization on campus called Truman’s Closet (Truman the Tiger is Mizzou’s mascot). We operate a store-like setting where the University’s students, faculty and staff can come and be personally styled in business casual or business professional attire free of charge.

I am also a founding member of the Sigma Kappa sorority here on Mizzou’s campus. I have served on the design committee and as a costume designer. Not only did pledging SK give me the opportunity to have some fun doing what I love, it also introduced me to 200+ fabulous sorority women who inspire me daily with their style choices (and 200+ closets to raid at my convenience).

My personal style is typically centered around the combination of hard and soft or vintage and modern. I love pairing feminine pieces with masculine elements inspired by women who are tough, smart and effortlessly glam. A little black dress, statement jacket and great heels are all a woman needs to take over the world! I also have a vintage handbag collection and a passion for all things snakeskin.

My love for fashion stems from being a competitive dancer throughout my childhood in St. Louis, Missouri. When I was young, my mother confronted me with an ultimatum – dance or gymnastics? I remember that the choice was a fairly simple one, why choose a leotard and bare feet when I could have a rack filled with bejeweled costumes and five different pairs of dance shoes? I also loved wearing stage makeup, especially red lipstick and fake eyelashes!

I am unbelievably excited to be a Style Guru this summer and can’t wait to share with you all the best fashion that the Midwest has to offer!
