Hello fellow Fashionistas and Fashionistos! My name is Allison Edwards, and I am currently a freshman majoring in Marketing and Fashion Merchandising at the wonderful University of South Carolina. I am ecstatic to have the opportunity to document this semester’s noteworthy fashions by joining the fabulous team of Style Gurus here at CollegeFashionista! I can’t wait to see what’s in store!
Rachel Zoe wisely stated, “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” This simple quote speaks volumes about the impact of everyday wear. Style extends far beyond the garments crammed into our closets, or if you’re like me, scattered amongst our rooms. Unique, personal style gives us the opportunity to be the artist painting our own self-image, reveals our sense of identity and is a portion of all our lives. Style is the way in which we take fashion and make it distinctly individual. Those who take risks, dare to be different and break the rules are the ones who stand out – the ones who are remembered.
Similar to many Fashionistas, my style began to find its own voice in my early years. As soon as I could walk, I trailed my mother on her shopping excursions mimicking her careful inspection of each garment. From there, my interest in fashion only grew. Throughout my life, fashion and the development of personal style have been powerful forces because they have allowed me to create on a daily basis to satisfy my persistent need for self-expression. Fashion is alive. It has grown and reinvented itself as I have and is a constant reflection of my inner self.
My personal style will always be evolving. I believe it is important to dress for yourself – to take items and make them your own. I love pairing a fresh, trendy piece with something classic and vintage or teaming feminine flourishes with an endearing tomboy article. No matter my outfit’s occasion, black basics are a staple, hats are a must and gold accessories are always included.
This spring I challenge you to liberate yourself from convention and personalize your style. Dare to be different. Be on the look out for my column LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS every Tuesday as I showcase men turning heads and visually expressing themselves through fashion.
