I am one of the new summer Style Gurus, Alexis Castillo-Snyder. I will be hunting down the best looks in Southern California for the STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK, featured each Monday. I am beyond excited to share some fashion looks from my home state with you and am thrilled to be a part of CollegeFashionista!
I am from La Palma, California, a small city located in Orange County. I am entering my senior year at the Savannah College of Art and Design where I am pursuing a degree in Fashion Marketing and Management with a minor in Writing. SCAD has exceeded all of my expectations and has provided a number of opportunities for me that most students only dream of. It is the perfect place for me and I cannot imagine being anywhere else. These have been the best years of my life—so far!
Growing up, I was very athletic and always involved in sports, from track and field to volleyball. I played softball for 11 years of my life. I came to SCAD on an athletic scholarship for softball and finally set my glove aside after my second year of playing. But even a dirt field and grass stains on my shirt never stopped me from wearing my hair in the most stylish ponytail possible with colorful bows to match my uniforms. In school, I wore uniforms every day until I was in college. I tried my hardest to make the most boring outfits look more exciting by adding fun jewelry to liven up my polo T-shirts, wearing unique shoes to accompany my plain khaki shorts and black skirts and applying fun makeup and hairstyles. No matter what activity, event, errand or time of day it was, my goal was to always make every outfit as fashionable as I could. Sometimes this called for some dress code rule breaking—but a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do!
My style reflects a lot of the West Coast vibe and has a laid back feel to it. I like to keep things simple, tasteful and, most of all, comfortable. I love getting dolled up in a dress and high heels, but I’ll never turn down a casual tank top and a pair of Converse sneakers during the day. I stick to a very neutral palette, but I don’t mind throwing on a bright and colorful accessory or lipstick for that extra pop.
Author and poet, Maya Angelou, once said, “I would like to be known as an intelligent woman, a courageous woman, a loving woman, a woman who teaches by being.” This quote has stuck close to my heart for a long time. Each day, I try to incorporate these words into my everyday outfits and lifestyle. I want to dress smart. I want to dress courageously, no holding back. I want to love every garment I put on. I want to be an inspiration to others through my craze for fashion. I hope you enjoy reading!
