STYLE ADVICE: Urban Gypsy

A lot of people feel confined by fashion; that they have to wear only certain things that are considered “conventional” or “normal.” As college kids and fashion students though, I believe we are slowly learning to challenge this convention, wear what we want, and look like what we want. This Fashionista is a prime example of that, as she wears the clothes she feels the most comfortable and happiest in. This is important.

Collectively, we decided her look this day was that of an “Urban Gypsy.” It is a look that is free flowing and natural, but also prepares her for a day out and about. The high-waisted, long skirt adds a bohemian touch, but the tennis shoes are the perfect juxtaposition for a college kid. Her hand embroidered crop top also adds a creative element, unique to her personal style. The layered flannel and oversize denim jacket help add depth to the look, while also adding purpose. Finally, the metallic retro backpack, definitely from a thrift store, is the perfect finishing touch that keeps it really old school and cool. Overall, this composition reaches across many levels of fashion to provide a contemporary look at multiple style influences. From the futuristic pack to the paisley skirt that seems from another culture, this outfit is bold and authentic.

Looks like these are really important on campus to remind people that fashion should be a form of self expression. It is wholly for yourself, and no one else, and people who are not afraid to show their true style and personalities are the ones we should look up to.
