STYLE ADVICE: Simply Structured

Ever had mornings of countless scrolling on Pinterest boards, searching for that outfit inspiration? That is my scenario most of the time. Talk about first world problems, right?

Maybe you need a wardrobe detox and revert back to basic pieces (e.g. white T-shirt, black fitted pants, black booties). For those experiencing fashion lapses, or those who want to establish a personal style, my style advice is to start at being a minimalist. Build up your wardrobe with simple pieces, going according to your budget and liking. After dabbling with neutral colored apparel, then start to work up to other colors, patterns, and different styles.

This Fashionista’s sweatshirt has a simple design. The color is not a neutral, but being muted pink it can pass as such. Another must-have for your closet is a coat. Her coat is wonderful because of its color and simple silhouette, making it great for any kind of outfit. This long coat can be worn to a soirée, or add structure to a laid-back outfit like hers. Coincidentally, her sneakers are the Nike Tanjuns ($65), which means simplicity 単純 in Japanese.

All of the pieces she wore can be easily incorporated into another outfit. However, if your outfits feel humdrum after dressing so minimally, use accessories, such as her backpack or makeup, to add some pizazz. Starting or restarting a no frills wardrobe can lessen morning stress and allow you to focus on more important things. Another big plus about minimalist pieces is that they are easy to throw on when rushing in the morning and still look on-point.
