STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Utilitarian Florals

April 20th, 2015 at 2:10am

Have you jumped onto the military trend yet? Are khaki colors, olive greens and tailored pieces filling your closet? No? There are ways (I promise!) to keep this seemingly heavy, masculine trend light and feminine. Take a cue from this Fashionista; she knows exactly what to do!

My favorite aspect of military style utilitarian pieces is that they are very simple and basic. They can be combined in so many different ways to create tons of outfits that are each spectacular. By relying on simple colors, silhouettes and only changing up your accessories, every look can make a statement. Another plus? If you’re not quite ready to get your pastel on, lighter shades of green, tan and gray make for perfect substitutes! Even though these styles have more traditional roots, they have been very well modernized to fit the trends of today, as this week’s featured Fashionista so clearly exemplifies.

I love, love, love this outfit! The easy tank top tucked into the flowing skater skirt emphasizes a super tiny waist and creates a lovely hourglass shape, which is further highlighted by the blazer. The silhouette is very girly, especially when combined with the floral print of the blazer and closely straddles the line between masculine and feminine. The suede lace-up boots here add a bohemian touch and keep within the neutral color scheme. I love the versatility and simplicity of this trend. The best part, however? It’s very easy to tailor to your own personal style, which is exactly what this Fashionista suggests.
