STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Tie-Dye It Like They Did It In the ’90s

If you haven’t already noticed, this season’s trends are literally a bunch of throwbacks to the past 40 decades. It’s very “out with the old, and in the with the new” due to modern day designer’s ability to take what was once known as tacky and goofy, and turn it into something stylish and trendy. Remember back in the day when we were just little kids of the ‘90s, and tie-dying shirts was the most exciting event of the school year? Put that together with a perfectly fitted maxi dress and you’re just as fashionable as this week’s Fashionista. Instead of associating tie-dye with peace signs and raging hipsters, it’s now a popular “festival” pattern that is front paging it on retail websites like TOBI and Urban Outfitters.

Tie-dye really hadn’t made a comeback until very, very recently. Instead of being too colorful and bright like in the past, it’s come back with subtler shades that don’t clash, and rather complement one another. Dresses, shirts, rompers and more all rock the tie-dye look, and it’s bringing back happiness and joy to our spring wardrobes without the floral. Although it’s still very “hippie chic,” it’s become increasingly popular in the celebrity scene. Mainstream fashion icons like Vanessa Hudgens, Lauren Conrad and Anna Kendrick have been killing the tie-dye game lately. It’s fun, and it’s a great way to make a bold statement. It allows for less accessorizing and freer fashion vibes. With festival-chic being the next big thing, tie-dye is only going to become better and louder.

This week’s Fashionista drew positive attention to her purple, tie-dyed maxi dress. Just in the time I spent photographing her, I heard the compliments coming in. Maxi dresses are known for their incredible flow and comfort, so what better way to embrace the flow than with some sleek tie-dye? Her maxi dress is at just the right length, not being too short or too long. It’s a great dress for a day of a class, or a walk on the beach. Her Tory Burch sandals are a great accessory and definitely the shoe of the spring season on our campus. Her simple, but pretty statement bracelets and rings are complementary to the purple tie-dye and complete the look. It’s a very chic, but laid back look perfect for the everyday California styled girl. It’s too bad I didn’t have her shoot a peace sign our way!
