STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Thrift And Thrive

As college students, our wallets already hate us enough for the amount of money we spend on tuition, textbooks, rent and, of course, Starbucks. When it comes to fashion, there are new trends that tempt us to shell out more cash. With the revived ’90s grunge trend still going strong this winter, why spend hundreds of dollars on a look when the local thrift store can provide a whole wardrobe? It may take some time shuffling through those packed racks of clothing, but it is so worth it in the end when unique hidden gems are discovered for an outrageously low cost.

A thrift store also caters advantageous when it comes to design inspiration. There has been a massive uproar of DIY projects due to the increased sharing capabilities brought up by the rise of social media. Thrift stores provide inexpensive garments that are perfect for experimenting with cutting and sewing.

This Fashionista rocks the current ’90s trend with a look that is comprised of some fantastic thrift store finds. In fact, 60 percent of her outfit was thrifted! She shared how she added her personal aesthetic to the jeans by ripping some holes with a blade and tossing them in the wash to get the distressed denim look. Her flannel and corduroy jacket were also thrifted, but a similar plaid shirt can be found here. She completed the look with a striped crop top and a classic red pair of Dr. Martens.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Have fun! Don’t be afraid to go thrifting! You never know, you may find some of your best pieces at a thrift store.”
