Ah, the rain. It was something I used to love as a child. I found nothing more comforting than tucking myself away in a big bundle of blankets on a drizzly day. I’d sit by the window with a cup of tea and watch the raindrops race down the window. And then university happened. I moved to Vancouver and if you know anything about this city, you know it rains a lot. We have famously become “Raincouver.” My lazy rainy days just aren’t as enjoyable anymore and my hair becomes one big frizz ball and that’s an issue. And don’t even get me started on the combination of fog and rain. This week saw buckets of rain hit our West Coast city, which always poses a challenge for Fashionistas and Fashionistos alike. But I say, don’t let a little precipitation put a damper on your trendy style! With a stylish raincoat, you’re set to take on the dreariest of days.
I spotted this Fashionisto on an incredibly rainy day up on campus. His navy RAINS rain jacket caught my eye straight away. A slick raincoat? You don’t come across those everyday! The ultra chic casual fit and short length of the jacket give the whole outfit a constructed and effortless feel. The navy, a step away from the classic yellow raincoat, is pure perfection. As a neutral colour, navy plays on the minimalist trend, which has been dominating fashion on both the runway and the streets as of late. It’s all about simplicity. This Fashionisto keeps his rain jacket unbuttoned to show off another navy clean-cut piece, a slim-fit stretch shirt from Club Monaco. It’s perfectly tailored and the collar flatters the entire look.
Now, I’m a big fan of the navy and beige colour scheme and this Fashionisto knocks it right out of the park. The colour palette in this outfit is flawlessly synchronized. From his oakwood suede (very daring in the rain) desert boots from Clarks to his messenger bag with leather buckles from Roots Canada, the added beige to the look gives a very subtle pop of neutral colour. I love the detailing of the rolled-up pant to showcase the boot. The pant is slim black denim from Nudie Jeans. The dark denim is the perfect match alongside the navy and beige pieces. And finally, the finishing detail of the outfit is a Retro Traveler Chronograph Stainless Steel Watch from Fossil. Talk about a standout accessory!
Ultimately, this Fashionisto pulls off a minimal look with his rain gear, which I believe is very difficult to master. Most rainy days make many of us want to latch onto anything comfortable — slouchy trousers, oversized sweaters and multiple layers. But be brave and go for a more masculine (feminine for you, Fashionistas) fitted look to emphasize shape. Since finding the right outfit on a rainy day is complicated enough, the outfit itself doesn’t need to be over embellished. Rather, keep it stripped back and let the immaculate aesthetics of block colours and clean-cut garments shine through.
