STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Key To Kimonos

July 24th, 2015 at 2:00am

Kimonos are a long-standing trend that originated in Japan, were brought over to America and were modernized for high fashion. The lightweight, flowy fabrics used for kimonos make them perfect for wearing outside in hot weather, especially when the temperatures drop at night as the sun goes down. Kimonos can be worn while walking on the beach, thrown over a simple shirt while heading to class or even made as your statement piece for your outfit at a festival. I mean, could they be anymore Coachella? What indie music-loving free spirit wouldn’t love dancing while wearing a free-flowing kimono and listening to his or her favorite musical artist? Although kimonos are versatile and can be worn for most occasions, there is one rule a Fashionista/o must follow while wearing one, which can be seen by this Fashionista.

This Fashionista keeps it simple by pairing her kimono with a chic and classic white dress. Kimonos are bold and make a statement, which is why the rest of your outfit should be simplified when wearing one. Mixed with other bold prints, kimonos can become eyesores since the prints will clash or overwhelm the look. Solid colors match seamlessly with kimonos, as they do not take any attention away from these already daring pieces. Simplicity is maintained in this Fashionista’s outfit as her look is pulled together with a black belt, Tory Burch cross-body bag and neutral tone wedges. Whether cool and casual or flirty and chic, kimonos are appropriate for nearly every occasion as long as you know how to simplify the rest of your outfit.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I love to be up-to-date on stylish things like kimonos, but I’m the type to be a more down to earth shopper. If people see something that’s cute, even if it’s not really ‘in’, they should still buy it.”
