Style Advice of the Week

Going to college in Providence, Rhode Island gives us Fashionistas the opportunity to experience all four seasons and allows countless outfit choices.

This Fashionista is always donning the latest and greatest trends for this season. One of my favorite looks this season is the boyfriend coat, otherwise known as oversized outerwear. As you can see here, oversized coats are not only meant for tall people. This Fashionista is petite and has the perfect structure to pull off the look. Pair this look with the bootie she has or even a simple heel for something a bit more sophisticated. I have also seen the trouser and oversized sweater look with this as well. Comfort is key, always! I believe the oversized coat is the perfect piece to keep warm on a brutal winter day.

Bigger usually doesn’t mean better on the fashion runways, but for this season designer after designer sent models wearing big, oversized coats down their catwalks. MaxMara, Rochas, Nina Ricci, Stella McCartney and Céline showed exaggerated outerwear shapes that had lovers of big, bulky sweaters cheering.

Apply these following techniques to wear this trend better. Some to consider while wearing oversized outerwear are belting, folding the sleeves and adding a scarf to the look.

Belts work for most body shapes if done right and with this trend, it definitely gives some shape to the oversized garment.

If the sleeves of your oversized are extra long, or even if they aren’t and you simply want to show some arm to minimize the “drowning” effect, fold them up.

Now, this one is a gem in its own right. Adding the scarf is the balance that you would need in this overpowering look. Sometimes it will be the answer to fixing something that you felt wasn’t right with your oversized coat look.
