STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Alt-Girl Lifestyle

Thin black chokers, messy up-dos, denim mini skirts, crop tops and vintage sneakers—is it just me, or have we all been time warped back into the ’90s rock and grunge scene of our dreams?

I, for one, am thrilled to see that the alternative look is back in vogue—and, in the case of the Marques’ Almeida spring 2017 ready-to-wear collection, featured on Vogue. The media buzz surrounding this trend has been nothing but supportive, and in my heavily biased opinion, anything that brings back looks that were popular way back when on Friends and The Nanny is a godsend. (But, please, no resurgence of the early ’00s trends for me!)

Our real life style icon to follow this month, Danielle, shares in my nostalgic sentiments precisely. Kindred soul to the likes of Rihanna and Mac DeMarco, this Fashionista isn’t one to shy away from what she labels as the “sad-boy” aesthetic, dressing up as a pro fashion risk-taker on the daily.

Interested in recreating this hip Fashionista’s urban chic ensemble? Look no further! All it takes is the skillful blend of thrift store apparel, a purposely messy hair-do and the fiercely confident attitude of a fashion model.

To start off, drop by your local consignment store for some authentic ’90s clothes. Any old thrift shop will do, though the neighborhood Goodwill or Plato’s Closet is always a good bet. If you can’t find an asymmetrical mini skirt, that’s fine: a pair of contemporary ripped shorts or vintage high-waisted pants cinched in at the waist will do just the trick. After that, dig around the sales bin for a pair of fancy sneakers—no detectable odor allowed—and an edgy black jacket. Now, if you live in Florida, a light jacket like Danielle’s is perfect for your seasonal needs. If not, invest in thick padding and guaranteed insulation! As for the critical pieces of your look (i.e., the choker and the striped crop top), look for them at your nearest department store, preferably H&M or Forever 21.

Strapped for time, or simply don’t have the strength or funds for a full-blown shopping trip? That’s OK too—a similar mini skirt like our Fashionista’s can be found at ASOS, the choker online at Forever 21 and the scoop neck crop T-shirt at Wet Seal. Finally, before you leave the house, check that you own the final pièce de résistance: a blazing hot bomber jacket from Urban Outfitters (imported from the UK)!
