STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Sweater Weather

There’s no denying the fact that sweaters are an absolute must for winter fashion, especially here in New York City. Yet the traditional sweater (even an oversized one stolen from your mom’s closet) can end up looking drab after a while. That’s right, Fashionistas. That ivory L.L.Bean cable knit you’ve been rocking over the past few winters may need to be retired in favor of a more contemporary alternative: the cowl neck sweater.

The first thing that comes to mind when you hear the term “cowl neck sweater” may be the scene from Friends in which Joey wears six sweaters to Central Perk.  So why have these sweaters been on the recent rise? Having recently taken on a more fashion conscious look, cowl necks can thank designers such as Oscar de la Renta and Michael Kors for their introduction into 21st century street wear. Not only are they a sophisticated substitute for the everyday sweater, but they offer both comfort and warmth. The extra fabric around the neck provides protection against the cold while also drawing attention to the face. Plus, they are incredibly easy pieces to pull off!

This Fashionista flawlessly models her cowl neck while opting for additional comfort and style in her Chanel espadrilles. Draping the biker jacket over her shoulders instead of actually wearing it adds an ultra-chic element to her outfit. To imitate the ‘70s style that this Fashionista is currently loving, pair a cowl neck with high-waisted jeans and boots of your choice.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I would say I’m really loving the ’70s trends coming back, especially in the high-waisted and flare denim. I’m also huge when it comes to comfort with shoes (I’ll pick sandals or boots over heels almost always) so it was awesome to see flat boots were such a big thing for winter.”
