STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Strong Stripes

Fashion Week is all about taking risks and breaking rules. Northampton Fashion Week doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but it’s a tempting hashtag when you see street style like this. Northampton is home to Smith College, where beanies are standard and Bean boots are expected. Needless to say, it’s refreshing to find a Fashionista that challenges the status quo. She wears a fur-lined hat and heeled booties, so clearly she’s not afraid to get creative. Her best accessory, however, is her confidence in her ability to mix prints.

This Fashionista works with a strong dark base (black tights, black dress) to keep the focus on her accessories. Her coat pulls together two colors typically associated as a fashion faux-pas and realigns our feelings towards the black/brown issue. She picks black as her main neutral and chooses a hat and shoes accordingly. This Fashionista keeps to her theme and wears mittens in a unique stripe print. The muted colors stand out dramatically against her neutrals. More importantly, the stripe pattern varies in a way that contrasts well with the measured lines of her coat. If her strong prints aren’t striking enough, she throws a fire engine red scarf into the mix because why not?

This Fashionista reminds us that fashion is fun. It’s also not something that only happens four times a year in New York, London, Milan and Paris. It’s right here, right now, right?

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Wear whatever you want; getting dressed should be fun and limitless.”
