This season is about newness, re-envisioning the past and exploring the classics. The plethora of patterns that have taken over the runways lately represent another modern take on tradition, marking the return of the timeless stripes as this season’s star graphic. Whether horizontal, vertical, thin, thick, black and white or in living color, stripes make a huge statement. And while I cant think of a time when stripes weren’t in, they are certainly back in a big way for summer 2013!
For summer, nautical stripes are all the rage, especially in classic red, white and blue. Today’s Fashionista looks like she’s straight out of Coco Before Chanel, before Coco opted for only black. Just as Coco took a design initially worn by sailors and popularized it among high society, this Fashionista reminds me of the simplicity, timelessness and cozy-chic of striped clothing. Plus, who doesn’t want to channel feelings of the beach, the ocean and the waves? What I love about her outfit is how she has avoided the “ships ahoy” look by pairing her stripes with a relaxed purple mini-skirt and red peep-toes. Finding a cheeky color story can really make wearing stripes fun.
Usually, I prefer the lady-like look, like how our Fashionista uses her sash to tie a loose bow. Another way to style your stripes, however, is to go the tougher route. Garments like a biker jacket, boyfriend jeans, bold patterns and animal prints can help spice up a traditional stripe. Try your own sweet version in this Boxy contrast-stripe T-shirt or this Striped Persephone Tank. For an edgier ensemble, resort to black and white with this Striped Crop Tank and this Glamorous Stripe Zip-Back Top. Stripe’s allow for so many reasons to be inventive, so don’t hesitate to bring out your inner sailor with stripes delight!
