STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Statement Piece

Warmer weather allows for much more variety in outfits, but how bold are we willing to get? While I would say a full neon outfit is tacky, and mixing fully patterned pieces is difficult, being bold doesn’t have to be so scary. In fact, it can be pretty easy and can make you feel super confident. Playing it safe with subdued colors and patterns is a ship I’m sailing on, but every once in a while it’s nice to change things up and take a risk. This Fashionista had a flawless execution of this, looking amazing and put together in a simple and easy outfit.

This Fashionista wore a midi length red plaid dress with the sleeves rolled up and a few buttons unbuttoned (which was a perfect match for the weather that day). Though red and plaid (and these things combined) can be said to be more of a fall look, the sheerness of the top and lightweight flowy bottom allows for this to be a great spring piece—especially for those of us that prefer darker colors, it doesn’t look too cold-weathery. Though the dress is fully patterned and a statement piece, she paired it with simple combat boots and a simple (and amazing) leather purse. These accessories are the perfect grungy contrast to the feminine dress, making the outfit combination swoon-worthy.The whole look seems completely effortless and bohemian and she oozes cool—at least in my opinion. With school coming to a close, we can all fight the urge to just attend class in comfy clothes and wear our more fun and eye-catching items, or finish out the year strong with a week full of your best outfits (that’s my method of operation).

Plaid is one of my favorite patterns and it seems like it’ll always be on trend—keep it simple like this red and black plaid if you’re not a pattern person. And of course, florals are always good for spring, but in the words of Miranda Priestly, “Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking” (The Devil Wears Prada is such a classic), so maybe test out some other patterns for some variation from the norm. You got this, I swear.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK?: “When wearing a statement piece, keep the accessories uncomplicated.”
