STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Springing into Fall

I often struggle with the short lifetimes of style trends. One minute a certain trend appears to be everywhere, until the next season comes along and you instantly forget about the pieces you were dying to get your hands on. Even though I fall for trends just like the next girl, I try to invest my money in pieces that I know can transition from season to season.

That’s why I instantly felt a connection with this Fashionista when she proved with her outfit that trendy pieces can transcend their season. With her olive green, cold shoulder blouse, she showed how to successfully update last season’s trend. The cold shoulder originally infiltrated closets everywhere back in the spring. And while the trend has diffused into fall (such as the off-the-shoulder jackets at Balenciaga), it’s still largely associated with summertime, sun-kissed shoulders.

But let’s forget all the rules to keeping spring and fall trends separate! This Fashionista successfully styled her summery, cold shoulder blouse in a fall-appropriate manner. She chose to pair her blouse with a black bralette, black skinny jeans and a pair of black booties. Ultimately, the all-black ensemble gave the look a certain edge but also made it more appropriate for the fall season with the darker colors. The black additions also make this outfit an easy one to transition from day to night. Although I caught her in the middle of her day, all this Fashionista has to do for the after-hours is ditch the sunglasses and add a piece of statement jewelry.

Honestly, when seasonal trends, such as the cold shoulder blouse, can be proven versatile they don’t seem like trends anymore. Although I admit to being a bit skeptic about giving into certain trends, sometimes they can successfully outlive their expiration date. So never give up too early on last season’s trends. Almost anything can be given new life and meaning.
