In correspondence to last week’s article, not all summer outfits have to solely revolve around the basic staples of high waisted denim shorts and crop tops. Though this combination is always a crowd pleasing favorite, there are plenty of other options when getting dressed for this gloriously toasty season. For example, incorporating sheer elements into your outfit is a trendy way to add intrigue to your overall look while simultaneously keeping you cool under the grueling sun.
The main reason I think it’s crucial for all Fashionistas to own a sheer piece or two is that they’re so versatile. They can be layered in many different combinations, which is a great way to keep your wardrobe looking fresh without constantly having to break the bank and buy new pieces all summer long. This Free People blouse might be a bit of an investment at first but it’s totally worth it since it can be casually worn with a simple bralette one day and an embellished tank top for a different glitzier occasion. Throw on the right accessories and you’ll have two completely different looks!
This Fashionista has the right idea by layering her sheer boho kimono over her flowy little black dress. Since this fun print immediately catches the eye, she’s smart to keep her accessories to a bare minimum. I would probably throw on a bold statement ring or a couple of gold bangles, but anything more than that would just look overly busy. The simple leather cross-body bag and Sperry Top-Sider shoes work together to make this Fashionista look effortlessly stylish, which is what dressing for summer is all about.
Sheer pieces can be challenging in the sense that they can often times be too revealing if they’re not coupled with the right undergarments. Dressing like Rihanna at the 2014 Council of Fashion Designers of America awards is not always a good look because let’s face it—nobody can pull that one off anyways. In order to avoid some kind of embarrassing malfunction, bralettes, bandeaus and camis in every color imaginable are your new best friends. Obviously no summer is complete without a killer pair of shorts. A semi-sheer white top with patterned shorts and gladiator sandals makes for an easy everyday look that will take mere seconds to throw together.
When the days are long and the air is thick and muggy, eating a Popsicle or lounging around in a sports bra might be a lot more tempting than putting on a stylish outfit. If this is true for you, then I encourage you to consider giving sheer clothing a try (with the right accoutrements of course!). After all, they’re so weightless you might even forget that it’s there at all!
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I always wear this kimono when I don’t want my shoulders to get too much sun. It’s light and airy so I never have to worry about overheating!”
