STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: School's Out, Preppy's Still In

My fellow Fashionistas out there probably know what it’s like be overwhelmed by all the possible styles that are out there. Some days, I decide that from then on I will dress exclusively according to ’90s grunge trends only to be completely inspired by a super girly look the next day. The concept that I’ve had to come to terms with is that you don’t have to stick to just one style, which is wonderful and beautiful, but also overwhelming.

Nonetheless, one style that I’ve always admired, but rarely found out how to integrate into my own wardrobe is the preppy look. When I think “preppy,” I think of J.Crew, tennis lessons and my sorority sisters. This Fashionista shows how to master preppy style without making it feel like a uniform.

I feel like a button-down shirt is a definite staple of the style. The tiny polka dots on this one keep it fresh and fun so that it doesn’t look too serious. White jeans are another classic; they always look crisp and clean, and they’re cooler than blue jeans for the summer heat. This Fashionista sticks to a neutral color palette with beige leather flip flops, but adds a bit of color and sparkle with her delicate necklace. I love the look of a little bling sticking out from under a collar to add some glamour to a look.

Overall, she uses the key pieces of preppy style as a base before adding her own personality to the ensemble. She proves that even when class is not in session, you can still rock this prep school-inspired trend.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Cute and comfy do exist together.”
