The preppy style is defined by qualities of class, sophistication and charm. It is about embodying an essence of refinement and maintaining an air of professionalism. This classic style was seen in the wardrobes of such fashion icons as Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy Onassis. In addition, many of the fashion industry’s top designers such as Kate Spade, Lilly Pulitzer and Ralph Lauren are known for having a preppy look or incorporating the preppy style into their clothing.
This week I found a fabulous Fashionista sporting a preppy look perfect for summer. At first glance, my eyes went straight to the super fun cherries printed all over her sundress of course! I know what many of you are thinking – cherries on a dress? It sounds like the perfect outfit for a four year old. However if Katy Perry can rock it, why can’t we? The cherry blossom pattern is both innocent and whimsical. It gives a fun flirtiness to our Fashionista’s dress while still staying classy. Her gold Kate Spade watch is a great simple accessory and her Jack Rogers sandals add a little extra prep in her step. Her confidence in her style was definitely evident in talking to her and this was key in rounding out her prep-inspired look.
As you can see, preppy isn’t limited to collared shirts and pearls. There are ways to stay sophisticated while still bringing in new trends and beating the summer heat. This Kate Spade bow tie dress is a similar style to our Fashionista’s choice and is perfect for an office meeting or afternoon brunch. Printed shorts are another great way to be preppy and on-trend. Try a pair like these from Ann Taylor Loft with a bright colored top and simple sandals for a day of shopping. Mixing prints is also popular in many fashion genres currently and prep is absolutely on board. Pair this Anthropologie polka-dot blouse with this striped skirt for perfect pattern mixing, day or night. Be sure to accessorize with statement jewelry, simple shoes and include lots of color.
I do have to say, I can’t get our Fashionista’s fruitylicious look out of my mind. Maybe I’ll start with this pineapple print bikini from J.Crew to see if it gets my fruity juices flowing this summer.
Inside all of us is a fashion icon waiting to be let out. Who knows, yours could be a classic Grace Kelly. So go ahead and grab your Jackie O shades and find out if the preppy style is calling your name. As long as you err on the side of charm and ballet flats, you can’t go wrong Fashionistas!
