STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Plaid And Knits

Following the conclusion of New York Fashion Week, I looked back on the latest menswear collections and noticed two major trends: layers and slim pieces. It’s no secret that men’s street style is all about layering. Not only is it completely sensible to bundle up in these intolerable weeks in-between winter and spring, but it’s super comfy! In the last few years, men’s pieces have gone from the baggy graphic T-shirts of 2008 to more fitting styles. Whether it’s a simple button-down or a graphic sweatshirt, mens’ street style has definitely upped its game. I mean, who doesn’t love a guy in a fitted khaki?

I spotted this Fashionisto on his way to grab lunch with a few friends, and I just couldn’t get over the combination of the plaid button-down and the knitted cardigan. I’m a sucker for button-downs; when I’m running late or feeling particularly lazy I even throw one on and call it a day. It’s is the best piece that can be paired with a cardigan, and the button detailing on this Fashionisto’s cardigan makes his look even more unique. The two pieces fit him well, and the addition of the top jacket offers even better protection against the cold.

Yet what I love most about his outfit is that this Fashionisto was not afraid to experiment with earth tones in the middle of winter. So many others would have gone for all-gray or -black, but he stands out in beautiful browns and reds. Plus, his lace-up boots are to die for. While they are casual enough to be worn to class, the boots can also also be worn for a dressier occasion if need be. If he had wanted to go for an even more casual look for the classroom, this Fashionisto could have thrown on a pair of cuffed, dark wash jeans and a sweater.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Guys’ clothing in general is way more slim and tailored than it has been and I like that. One trend I’ve spotted here at Fordham is higher, hemmed/cuffed pants.
