STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pattern Mixing

October 5th, 2015 at 2:10am

I usually do not find menswear to be very exciting. I don’t think menswear trends are anywhere near as interesting or evolutionary as womenswear trends, and the excitement I feel towards men’s fashion week is almost nonexistent, especially when compared to the elation I feel when fashion month arrives.

This Fashionisto, however, got me interested in menswear. I am loving how he mixed patterns by pairing a navy polka-dot button-down with a funky, colorful pair of sneakers.

Navy is one of my favorite colors, because you can wear it as a neutral (even with black!) and it is universally flattering. The polka-dot pattern of the shirt still reads “adult menswear” because of the shape; the shirt isn’t too loose or too slim. He chose to leave the top two buttons undone, for a more relaxed feel.

His sneakers have pink, blue and beige tones, which is why they work with the navy top and beige pants. The key to pattern mixing is pulling items that have the same colors in them, creating a more cohesive look. I also love how this Fashionisto didn’t opt for a more standard, trendy sneaker, like Nikes, Converse or Stan Smiths. These shoes are different from what everyone else seems to be wearing.

He finished off the look with a loose, lightweight navy jacket, to keep warm in temperamental fall temperatures.

I will definitely be taking a cue from this Fashionisto by mixing prints this fall.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I love to shop the H&M “Easy Iron” line. The clothes wrinkle less easily and when they do wrinkle, they’re easy to get out. It makes getting ready in the morning a lot easier.”
