STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pastels and Leather

Style Advice of the Week

I know many of us have already ditched our winter blacks and grays for the spring 2014 color trend that is pastels! There are so many great things about these light feminine colors! You can wear them from day to night whether it be at work, out on the town or taking it easy during spring break. Our Fashionista this week kept her winter blacks in the closet grave and decided to mix a hard trend with a soft trend, creating a fun yet put together look.

One thing many of us love about pastels is they come in many different colors. Many people worry that they will look like Easter threw up on their outfit, but when styled right you can look sophisticated and modern. You can wear pastels anywhere from the office during the day to dinner and a movie at night.

Our Fashionista this week not only played with a soft color, she also teased with a hard texture: leather. She wore a pastel blue cardigan from Forever 21 with a simple white undershirt underneath and then paired it with a very cute leather skater skirt that she also found at Forever 21. Our Fashionista has a tiny frame which is great because a skater skirt will give her body great shape. Skater skirts are typically fitted at the waist and flared out into an A-line silhouette. The skater skirt comes in many varieties of fabrics, colors and prints, meaning there’s a type out there to fit every style and body type. Our Fashionista opted for the classic black leather. The hard texture that is leather is fun to wear because it makes you look tough yet luxurious at the same time. But not everyone wants to look like a tough biker chick. The perfect way to soften the look of leather is to pair it with a lighter color and fabric like cotton.

Our Fashionista wore some killer brown riding boots from Aldo that were a great medium to the light colors of her tops and the black to her skirt. She wore great metallics when it came to her accessories. I particularly loved her leather watch from Charming Charlie. The diamonds add a fun pop of bling to her outfit as do her gold bangles from Wet Seal.

Mixing different textures is the perfect way to create more versatility in your outfits, giving your outfit interesting depth and contrast which is great for someone who wants more of an individual and personal approach to how they dress. So take this Fashionista’s look as inspiration for a day where you want to have the perfect balance between being soft and hard. That’s the great thing about fashion: we can have it both ways!
