STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pairing the Old With the New

Having scored the best of last year’s Limited Too collection, it always felt like a second Christmas when it came time for my older sister and I to have our annual closet clean-out.

When working with hand-me-downs, it is quite easy to look as if you are stuck in another decade. I knew I could count on this Fashionista to show just how easy is to add your own style into others’ leftovers. She effortlessly models a floral tank top with hunter green shorts and a boho-inspired leather belt; all in which were handed down from family members. By pairing the old with the new she achieved a fun yet casual look; keeping an earthy color pallet with a fun bralette, neutral TOMS and Ray-Ban Sunglasses. With a quick bun and laid-back cross-body, she can be best dressed while running errands or rocking her look while at lunch with friends.

Studies show in just the past twenty years we have purchased four times more clothing and unfortunately tons (literally tons) of these textiles end up in landfills. The two for one tank top deal is hard to pass, I know; however when you begin considering the full life cycle of our clothes we see the price we pay in negative outcomes is far greater than the instant gratification when we score a deal. Don’t immediately throw out the idea to take in closet misfits. At first, it may not exactly fit your style, but take on the challenge of making it your own. Instead of jumping in the car to go to the mall, have a clothes swap when you and your friends feel they need to revamp their closet. Shop at your local thrift stores or utilize online second-hand clothing sites to score some major deals while doing some good for the environment.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Don’t expect to share the same style as the original owner. Pair hand-me-downs and thrifted pieces with some of your favorite closet staples in order to make it your own.”
