STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Not Your Boyfriend’s Varsity Jacket

Style Advice of the Week

Spring has finally sprung and classes are now coming to an end. For those of you like me this is an exciting time, but for some of you means an end to an amazing four years here at Happy Valley.

Regardless, I know all of us on campus are more anxious than ever to throw out our numerous books and take to laying out catching some rays. With this high level of excitement in tow, fashion lovers are tending to gravitate towards pulling out those high-rise cut-offs and sleeveless crop tops, but wait just a minute! We are forgetting that we are now in the transition state and while lighter layers are a must, we cannot forget to throw a light jacket on especially with these unpredictable temperatures we have been victim to lately. An item that I have recently become obsessed with getting for spring is one that is not only super unique but one that takes the cake in versatility: the varsity jacket.

In my opinion, the varsity jacket is a staple piece all Fashionistas should invest in. With its only recent popularity on the fashion scene, many trendsetters have been skeptical about it. No need to fear here though because the varsity jacket can fit almost any and all outfits. From skinnies and a white pump to a casual maxi dress, the varsity jacket might just be the perfect light, fashionable jacket we have been searching for.

I love how this Fashionista decided to style her varsity jacket. She chose a plain, black maxi skirt and paired it with a tight white scoop neck T-shirt underneath. By sticking with solids, she was able to spice up her look a little with accessory pieces. She chose a fun and brightly colored patterned scarf that she effortlessly looped around her neck to create a laid-back, simple look for a busy day of classes. While her varsity jacket couldn’t be cuter, it takes the look up even more with its accented studs along the shoulders. To finish her look she rocks a messy up-do and a pair of pointed silver-toed flats.  For her books, she carries a somewhat hippie-vibe shoulder bag.

The look pictured here is a perfect outfit to welcome spring but also fight those one day warm, one day cold temperatures. From highs of 80 to lows of 50 it can be tough to find the right outfit especially on days when going home seems forever away. By pairing lighter pieces like maxi skirts and thin cotton T-shirts with a varsity jacket and a flirty scarf, you can create a look that is a definite win this time of year. To finish out strong these next few weeks, strive to create a look similar to this and say “Bring it on!” to these unpredictable temperatures.
