STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Not Your Boyfriend’s Jeans

Boyfriend jeans: the jeans that women love and men love to hate. This slouchy and comfortable style made its way back into the style arena last spring and has been putting up a good fight with those ever-so-tight jeggings ever since. Baggy denim adds an element of comfort during the day that skinny jeans don’t tend to give us. This style is great for a casual lunch with friends or running errands on the go!

This trend has been seen on countless celebrities including Kristin Cavallari, Selena Gomez and Kourtney Kardashian. It gives off an easy yet stylish vibe that we all strive for on our casual days. It’s important to remember that when trying out this trend, you are not wearing jeans that are too big (aka these are not your boyfriend’s jeans)! This style should fit true to size at the hip, slouchy throughout the legs, and then should taper in at the ankle, which keeps this shape the most flattering.

How you style this look is extremely important. In order to avoid looking like you are drowning in your clothes, try to go with either something more fitted on the top, or something with a definite shape such as a boxy blouse. You could also top this look off with a structured blazer. If you are petite try adding pumps or heeled booties to add length in order to balance out the width on the legs of the jeans. And don’t be afraid to experiment with different brands and washes! Different styles and washes look different on everyone, and regardless of shape or size everyone and anyone can pull of this look as long as the styling and fit are done right!

Unfortunately, this comfortable look isn’t a look to be worn everywhere (sorry ladies!). Most boyfriend jeans tend to be distressed which inherently makes them slightly more casual than the typical straight leg or skinny cut. Although these jeans are comfortable, stick to the more fitted styles for a night out to be more formal.

This fashionista is wearing her favorite American Eagle distressed boyfriend jeans with a cropped fitted Project Social T knit V-neck. She accessorized with a layered necklace and a few stacked bracelets and printed watch. And finally she topped the outfit off with a Free People droopy cardigan and classic Birkenstock Arizona slides. She looks comfy and chic, and is ready to hit the streets!

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK?: “Boyfriend jeans are the perfect way to stay comfortable throughout the day. I style mine simply with a T-shirt and a few accessories in order to look put-together but not like I’m trying to hard.”
