Coco Chanel once said, “Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.” And this, CollegeFashionista readers, is the quote to live by this week. One of my favourite trends of the season is minimalism. Returning to the basics, minimalist clothing does not scream for attention. The beauty is simply embedded within the pieces. However, don’t be afraid to play around with this trend. This Fashionista has done just that by mixing a sophisticated overcoat with street style edge. By adding subtle hints of grunge to her outfit, she gives minimalism’s modern and graceful legacy a twist.
The elegant minimalist overcoat is taking over the runways and the streets with its boxy shape, tomboy silhouette and chic palettes of black, navy, camel, grey and, of course, white (shout out to pastel pink too). Mastered by the brilliant designs of Chloé, Céline and Carven, the runways prove that less is more with coats this season. The key to finding a great overcoat that will carry you through the seasons is the length. Look for a coat that hits knee-level with a clean line. This gives the coat a polished look.
Wearing a deep purple overcoat from UK brand AllSaints, this Fashionista nails the minimalist, yet edgy look. The coat is the centre of the outfit and constructs the whole style. I adore the coat’s added detail with the black three-quarter sleeve and classic folds. The edge of this outfit is the HAIM band T-shirt. It is the perfect touch. The Fashionista told me she picked it up at one of their shows this year, which instantly gives the outfit some indie street cred (with a dash of ’90s throwback).
Peeking through the outfit’s staple piece, and paired with the HAIM T-shirt, are denim Moussy shorts layered with sheer tights. I adore the match-up of the tights with the overcoat. Tights allow for the coat’s exaggeration in both width and volume, which is very flattering (another trend we are seeing on the runway this season is oversized coats). You want to continue to make the jacket the standout piece of the outfit. By coupling the overcoat with a pair of pistol boots from Acne, the Fashionista makes the trend look effortless. She finishes off the look with trendy rings, a bold red lip and perfectly matched Anne et Valentin glasses.
Fashionistas and Fashionistos (this trend is definitely for you too, gentlemen), don’t be afraid to slightly challenge the minimal look with a few delicate edgy pieces. The key is to intensify the look in an undemanding way. Keep minimalism the main theme of your outfit.
I would hope the timeless masculine shape of today’s neutral coat would make Mademoiselle Chanel proud with its minimalist elegance and simple aesthetic. Oh, and I hope she wouldn’t mind the added street style!
