STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Melding Masculinity and Femininity

January 12th, 2016 at 2:10am

In the past couple of years I have become a huge fan of menswear. From buying all the boyfriend button-downs at Madewell to stealing my brothers’ oversized flannels and crew necks, masculine pieces have definitely made their way into my wardrobe. Yet, I still love my dresses, skirts and heels just as much. The combination of an oversized masculine shirt or pair of boyfriend jeans with a girly pair of heels and just the right amount of accessories creates the perfect balance between masculinity and femininity.

This is exactly what this Fashionista does here. She dons an oversized white button-down shirt from Madewell exemplifying a more masculine look. This long tunic immediately grabs one’s attention, as it exudes such a clean, crisp look. A look that can be paired perfectly with almost anything. This Fashionista decides to pair this oversized shirt with some tight burgundy skinny jeans and black suede high heel pumps. This mix of feminine and masculine creates the perfect style juxtaposition, as she balances some looser, more casual menswear pieces with more form fitting feminine pieces. To add some extra detail, she sports some cool gold bracelets, rings and necklaces. Simple jewelry allows the outfit to keep that minimalist vibe.

The oversized button-down shirt is really the key piece in this outfit. The shirt gives her otherwise girly outfit a masculine edge, allowing her to pull off just the right amount of masculinity. Overall this Fashionista sports an effortlessly cool look. She could easily swap out her more formal heels for a pair of sneakers completely transforming this outfit to an easy day look. So, don’t be afraid to switch up your look a bit and buy that masculine piece next time you are shopping! When done well, menswear adds a sporty, comfortable and cool element to any outfit.

What is Your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “A white button-down is a pretty clutch staple piece that everyone should own. It is so versatile and can be worn buttoned all the way up for a clean, professional look, or with a few buttons undone for a looser, more casual look.”
