STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Mayan Apocalypse

Style Advice of the Week

We all heard plenty about the Mayans in 2012, but in 2013 I hope to see Mayan-inspired style, particularly for the boys. I spotted this Fashionisto on Newbury Street in Boston and I loved his mixing and matching of Mayan prints. Karmaloop has been a longtime favorite of mine, and it’s fitting that this Fashionisto channels Karmaloop style in Boston.

To get this Fashionisto’s look, build bold prints around simple details. Start out with a pair of well-fitting pants; I prefer dark blue denim or waxed styles like this charcoal pair from Karmaloop. Waxed denim adds a new texture to the mix with a sheen that is still masculine enough for the boys. When looking at Fashionisto style, my eyes always go straight to sneakers. In my opinion, style is directly proportional to one’s shoe game. This is is why I have more shoes than coffee cups. The lesson here, boys, is to buy more shoes. Right now, I’m loving suede kicks like this sleek style from Vans. If those aren’t your style, these classic low tops work too. For a peek of print, I suggest these dope socks from my favorite Boston boutique Bodega.

Onto the fun, hoodies on hoodies on hoodies, the best boy style staple. Karmaloop has an incredible selection of hoodies and crewnecks, and I highly recommend taking some time to browse their selection. I picked out this style for its pop of blue, and because I’m partial to pairing brown and gray. As for accessories, reach for three things: a hat, watch and sunglasses. I prefer snapbacks to fitted styles because I’m a ’90s child and they are more casual. This style adds another print while maintaining a different but cohesive color scheme. I really like wooden accessories for men thanks to my favorite Philadelphia boutique, Kembral. This dark watch has a unique face shape and is a great conversation starter. If you would prefer wood in sunglasses than I suggest this wayfarer style, but I would not suggest wearing them together.

To build your wardrobe, don’t be afraid to purchase pieces out of your comfort zone. You’ll find that they come in handy when spicing up your basics. For the boys, it’s all about fit and details. Step out of your comfort zone and try out mixing prints for the first party of the year. If that’s too much for you, rock waxed denim with your favorite T-shirt and a conversational watch. I promise you will be noticed in a very good way.
