STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Maxi Madness

Okay Fashionista/os, let’s be real: the best part of winter is when Starbucks brings out the red cups. A close second though is being able to wear layers upon layers of cute winter clothes. From what I’ve seen thus far in London, where it doesn’t quite get as cold as New York City, layering is essential. This winter you can save yourself a ton of trouble (and time) by picking up some of the season’s trendiest staples: over-the-knee boots, blanket scarves and midi skirts.

This Fashionista was grabbing coffee by the Fordham campus here in London when her mermaid-like midi caught my eye. Women all over London are rocking this trend in many different variations, but this pleated metallic green number from ZARA is one of the most unique styles I’ve seen. Her midi skirt is perfectly on-trend, and just enough to keep her warm in 50-degree London. She paired the stand-out skirt with a trusty pair of white Converse, a black turtleneck and a denim jacket. For extra protection from the brisk British wind, she layered a plaid blanket scarf on top.

This look works not only because the skirt by itself is a great piece, but because of the composition of the outfit as a whole. Midi skirts can easily swallow up your look, but with the right pieces it can really complement your body type and style. Her denim jacket and tight turtleneck work to the extent in that the turtleneck allows for the skirt to do the talking, while the jacket defines her waistline. She kept the accessories minimal, adding different textures to the metallic skirt via her plaid scarf and maroon faux fur bag charm.

To recreate this look this winter, you first need to find your perfect midi. They come in all different colors, textures and styles so pick one that suits your style and run with it! With your skirt, layer simple pieces like a tight top and a jacket as displayed here, or create a drop waist illusion with a big knit sweater. Whatever midi you choose, substituting it in for your normal go-to distressed skinnies or leggings can make for a really great winter ensemble.
