STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Mastering Metallics

It is officially fall here in New York City. Through the sea of dark-hued outfits that has taken over campus, this Fashionista stood out with a take on a bold trend: metallics. Most of us associate metallics with evening wear, and they can be intimidating to try to pull off. However, with the right styling tips, they can be a perfect addition to your daytime look, can help brighten an outfit and make you stand out amongst the typical abundance of dark palettes.

If this is your first time experimenting with metallics, my first tip would be to start small. Try incorporating it into your look through a piece of jewelry, a handbag or even a pair of shoes. This is a great way to add a bit of metallic to your outfit without it being over bearing. The best choice in shoes to keep the look casual for day time is to wear flats or low heeled ankle boots. With handbags, any size or style is generally safe. This backpack, cross body bag or shopper bag are some great options for school.

If you’re feeling a little more daring, try incorporating metallics in the larger pieces of your outfit. A metallic bomber, pleated midi skirt or pants can be the perfect stand out piece: But proceed with a degree of caution. The key to pulling this off, especially for a daytime look, is to keep the rest of your outfit neutral and simple. This Fashionista did this flawlessly by pairing her metallic culottes with a monochromatic grey sweater in a similar tone, and her distressed denim jacket and sneakers add the perfect casual elements. You want to make sure that you really shine without looking over the top!
