STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Making Messy Look Good

It’s that point of the summer when everything starts slowing down. Weekly weekend trips to the beach start seeming more exhausting than exciting, and the temperature and humidity outside continues crawling higher and higher. In the Tallahassee later summer season, people on their off-days are more likely wanting to stay inside and be lazy in air conditioning than participate any other summertime activity. This past week only further proved that, as the last couple of days we have come dangerously close to record highs nearing 100 degrees. However, you can’t stay inside all weekend—meeting up with friends for lunch and running errands are still necessities. So when you do finally peek outdoors, you have to find ways to bring the coziness of your lazy clothes to a fashionably conscious look.

The great thing about a big, flowy maxi skirt is how innately comfortable it is. This summer I fell in love with them and have almost filled my closet to the brink with a plethora of these skirts due to how easy they are. One can throw them on with a basic tied up T-shirt like this Fashionista did, or dress them up with a tight fitting body suit or dainty crop top. Skirts like this particular one are great for two reasons: the slits and the vivid pattern. The slits on the side are great for air flow, especially in the dead of the summer season. This Fashionista accentuates the slit even more by tying it up on one side, giving her look a little edge. As they take up most of the outfit, patterns on maxi skirts are immediate eye catchers and allow even the most simple of looks to become a statement. While perhaps this Fashionista was just lounging around in some shorts and this T-shirt before she left her house, throwing on this skirt with just a few accessories allowed her to take the comfort of the indoors, outside.

Some other things to notice about her look are the little details of her outfit. Most people save basic T-shirts for plain casual wear and do nothing to even slightly amp up the simplicity of the piece. Here, she has paired it with a strappy high-neck bralette that rises slightly above the neckline. If you have cool undergarments, show them off! If you’re not a fan of high-neck pieces, try the same idea with a low-back basic T-shirt and a lacy racerback bralette for a softer look. Her fringe bag also plays well with the skirt’s tassles, and the brassy tones of her long necklace and lace-up heels add some cool natural colors to her outfit. Overall, well played!
