STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Loco for Long Coats

If you think winters are long, you have yet to see the latest winter/spring trend, the long coat. A traditional overcoat is one of the oldest and most essential pieces of clothing, and the long style has had a place in fashion for decades. This year we are seeing it come back again as many designers include the piece in their collections. The longer the coat, the better.

The winters are cold here in Toronto and you can never be without a coat for when the temperatures drop below zero. Although the main purpose of a long coat has been for function (keeping those buns toasty!), this classic style has once again become a key trend for this season with its clean lines and traditional look.

The long coat is a key piece which has been repeated throughout history. The first generation of the long coat dates back to the 17th century. It was simply a fashion piece for royals and aristocrats, but it eventually became a mainstream style available to everyone.

One of my favourite things about the long coat is that you can throw one over just about anything. Your look instantly looks chic and smart, even with jeans and sneakers underneath as shown by this Fashionista.

Perfect for the winter and even the spring, long coats come in an endless array of styles, colours and textures. Try a heavy wool coat for the winter and a lightweight trench coat for the spring.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Be bold. Be daring. Never be afraid to make a statement.”
