Style Advice of the Week

As the true cold season is in our midst, it’s time to look for that essential go-to coat for those long winter nights. Now, I know that in some places like Miami and Los Angeles, it never really gets cold enough to have a winter coat, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a wardrobe essential to have. To me a quick outfit that’s still fashionable includes jeans and a pea coat paired with boots or, as shown by this Fashionista, a fun pair of flats. Dress it up or down with a scarf and accessories, and you’re good to go. However, the whole outfit has to start with the jacket.

There are so many different types of coats out there with a variety of prices, styles and colors that you’re sure to find what you’re looking for. There’s this double-breasted peacoat that runs for under $50 at J.C. Penney or you could splurge and go for a Ralph Lauren’s Black Label jacket ranging from $500 to $2,000 such as this leather-trimmed cape. No matter what your preference is, there are a lot of choices out there.

So here are a few things to consider when picking a winter coat: It’s better to invest in a nicer jacket with better quality because although you might only wear it for one or two months out of the year, with a quality jacket you’ll be able to use it for many years. Make sure the fit is perfect and don’t settle for anything less. If it’s too tight it won’t be comfortable to wear and the same goes if it’s too big. Go for a neutral color like black, white, gray or maybe even red. That way you can wear it with as many outfits as possible without clashing with your outfit. Finally, if you know you probably won’t be taking the coat off all night, say you’re going to an outdoor event, then pull your hair back into a slick ponytail or bun, add some dangle earrings and you’re set for a chic look for the entire night!
