STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Lessons Learned, Leathers Yearned

Style Advice of the Week

Since the dawn of time (or as far as we can remember), leather jackets were one of the most popular trends in the 1950s and 1960s. But before Yves Saint Laurent showed his Perfecto-inspired jacket on the runway, it was first introduced in 1928 by Irving Schott. During this time, leather jackets symbolized adventure, excitement and danger for motorcyclists. Eventually, Schott’s leather jacket was utilized in World War II for fighter pilots. The jackets served to help protect aviators against harsh elements. Twenty two years later, leather jackets became the symbol of teenage rebellion and were banned from schools around the country. Not too long after that, the punk and grunge movements rose and leather jackets were embedded in studs and patches. In today’s society, the infamous jacket is now an essential piece in both men and women’s closets. It has also become equivalent to the little black dress.

Although leather jackets were referenced to “hoodlums” in the past, this Fashionista captures the essence of classic style. She wore black jeans, a loose color blocked top and a sleek leather jacket. Her leather jacket has multiple studs on the collar and lapel. It also has various angled zippers which draws the eye diagonally down. The belt on the jacket helps contour her petite figure and gives her look some edge. After taking some shots of her, I couldn’t help drool over her amazing leather jacket. It’s grungy and feminine at the same time without looking too bulky. In addition to the clothes, she accessorized with black suede peep toe wedges that were downright adorable. Lastly, her gold watch and jewelry adds a little more flare to an incredible outfit.

Leather jackets are great staple pieces for the fall. Even though they are thin, these jackets give a multitude of protection from the cold weather. They can be combined with layered tees, dresses, skinny jeans or skirts. If you’re seeking a bold look, try combining a leather jacket with an asymmetrical short. These shorts have become quite trendy and are perfect matches for leather jackets. Some could even say these two items were long lost soul mates! If you have a very feminine style like me, go for adding a simple leather jacket to your collection. It can help transition many of your pretty florals for the fall season, creating a little spunk to your style. You can try different styles of leather jackets to find one that suits you. You want one that’s comfortable and will give you the inner confidence you need to  just simply: rock ‘n’ roll!
