STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Layers Upon Layers

Style Advice of the Week

Other than worn-in leather booties or cozy fur vests, there are few things more chic than an outfit that’s perfectly layered. At times, layering is easier said than done: thinner clothes first; never match two of the same fabrics; be mindful of losing your silhouette in too many sweaters.

This Fashionista, however, adheres to a very classic and simple structure. Her romper cinches right at the waist to not lose her silhouette. The high waistline of the romper also works to lengthen the look of her legs. She pairs two cozy cardigans – one light chiffon, the other cotton — to keep warm during the characteristically rainy days here in Paris. Another rule of layering: place a bit of color somewhere in your outfit. An all black outfit may look chic and easy to pull off, but you’ll lose your figure in a sea of darkness. The addition of the milk tone colored cardigan helps to break up some of the layers and provides just the right amount of color. It also pairs well with her light gray, two-toned scarf.

For one thing, infinity scarves are essential here in Paris, or anywhere for that matter. There’s something about a chic scarf — be it patterned, knit or neutral, that really ties an entire outfit together. Not only that, but a scarf is the perfect no-fuss accessory that works as a great focal point in any outfit.

This outfit in particular could be worn for just about any occasion, but would work well for a mid-afternoon coffee date or meeting with a professor. This look is simple, structured and well put together. Sometimes layers can be fussy and overdone. But, by keeping everything neutral, this Fashionista looks both classy and approachable.
