I must admit that my inner middle school self tends to appreciate fall more than anything else. Partly due to the fact that in fall layering becomes more apparent and in middle school I totally melted when I saw anything with a collar, especially if a collar was peeping out under a cotton sweater. I owned polos in various colors and I layered button-downs under sweaters daily. Although my style has greatly diversified since then, I still melt a little inside when I see this combination. Not only did I spot this Fashionisto wearing my favorite layering combination, he was also wearing a great plaid print on his sweater. And there’s no surprise that plaid was my second obsession in middle. However, what I love most about this outfit is how such a simple step of wearing a collared shirt made this look polished and clean.
Recreate this look with two key pieces. Start with a lightweight cotton sweater in any color or print. For men, I would opt for a plaid or striped sweater. For ladies I would also go for stripes or even a polka-dot sweater. Next wear a button-down shirt, with a collar of course, in a contrasting color. This Fashionisto decided to contrast his light gray sweater by wearing a dark shade of gray underneath. Once these two components are complete finish you outfit with your favorite pair of jeans. For girls, I like to see the layering look with leggings for a causal outfit or slim-fit pants for a more formal setting.
