STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Keeping it Basic

June 11th, 2015 at 2:00am

I am absolutely one of those people that creates a mental list of everything they are going to do when they wake up in the morning, from what time to take a shower to what kind of coffee they want to drink before class starts. Even though I have so many morning plans, I usually end up hitting snooze on my alarm clock until I finally roll out of bed. When I have those kinds of mornings where time is of the essence, I look for something to wear that is low maintenance but still looks like I put in the effort to look cute. One of the best tricks I have come to find during rushed mornings is sticking to the basic pieces in your wardrobe that you can dress up in a pinch, such as a pair of jeans, leggings and a colored top. With the help of the Fashionista that is the focus of this article, I am going to show you how to take two basic pieces and create two fun looks out of them by adding different pieces of your wardrobe.

The two basic pieces that this Fashionista is wearing are a pair of black leggings and a blue tank top. In her first look, this Fashionista paired her leggings and tank top with a floral kimono. The kimono takes seconds to put on but makes the outfit look much more put together. The floral print adds a dainty and feminine spin to the outfit and the pretty white bow pulls the look together. She accessorized with flip flops, a black leather mini backpack and earrings.

This is just an example of how to take basic pieces from boring to original and fun. If you are having difficulty, think of your basic pieces as the star of the show and the accessories and other clothing pieces as supporting characters. You want your clothing pieces and accessorizes to highlight the basics and to make them look as fantastic and effortless as possible!
