Like many of my fellow Fashionistas and Fashionistos, I moved away from home for university — twelve hours away from home to be exact. But unlike most, I never got to experience that small town college life. I grew up in a city of a million people. And for university, I moved to a city with three million people. In terms of culture, getting my degree in a metropolis that allowed me to wander aimlessly, discovering hip new cafes, shop fronts and street art, was a pretty cool experience.
A perk about attending Simon Fraser University is our many campuses. Our main campus is on a mountain, above the clouds, in the middle of a forest (Hogwarts much?). And another one of our campuses is in the heart of downtown Vancouver. In between classes, you had the whole city at your fingertips. You had the ability to go out and people watch, which I know is a personal favourite for many people. This was a great opportunity to uncover street style’s best trends.
In a graffiti-filled alley just outside of our downtown campus, this Fashionisto nails the ’90s shirt-tied-around-the-waist grunge trend. And can I just say this was the perfect location to shoot some great throwback fashion choices? Tying a light wash denim thrift find around his waist, this Fashionisto combines the edgy look alongside another classic ’90s favourite, a pair of black Dr. Martens that have a hint of shine. I absolutely adore the thick socks pulled up to mid-calf. It’s subtle and gives the look that perfect dose of quirk. Rocking a black denim jean from Topman, the Fashionisto allows for his monochromatic statement black mesh T-shirt to be front and center. The wolf, an animal of power and grace, seems to be the most fashionable species in the animal kingdom as of late (flashback to that time where I spotted another Fashionisto with a wolf on the back of his jacket). Over top of his Topman graphic wolf T-shirt is a quilted bomber jacket from Topshop. And to finish off the look, the Fashionisto sports a Little America Backpack from Herschel and Michael Kors watch.
The all-black look created by this Fashionisto is perfect for your typical day on campus. It’s minimal and simplistic, yet still ultra edgy with the wolf statement T-shirt. The denim tied shirt blends in with the monochromic outfit brilliantly and all the textures incorporated into the ensemble gives the look depth.
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to live in such a fashionable city during college and I can truly say the inspiration I took from the streets of Vancouver have helped shaped my personal style. Like this Fashionisto shows us, city life is the perfect backdrop for showcasing your individual fashion.
