When it comes to summer dressing, layering is key. You never know when a restaurant will be air-conditioned or a rain shower will hit. It is imperative to have options. What you layer with is a different story. No one wants to lug around a thick knit, a blazer too stiff or a cardigan that is blah. The perfect answer? A chambray shirt. Denim shirts have answered all my layering issues in the past. I honestly don’t know where I would be without them. At least three pairs live in my closet (this does not count my printed denim — let’s just say I wear chambray a lot). Although every Fashionisto and Fashionista should own a few staples, nothing is more useful than the denim shirt. It can be worn in the spring, fall, winter and summer, and can dress an outfit up or down. It basically adds the perfect finishing touch to every look.
This Fashionista chose a striped black-and-white dress to pair with her wonderfully faded chambray button-down. The denim shirt dresses down her dress, making it the perfect ensemble for an evening in the park. Her coral sandals add a subtle pop of color and her saddlebag is a fabulous carry-all. This Fashionista’s clubmaster sunglasses shade her eyes and polish off this casual and comfortable outfit. To make the denim shirt yours, simply add it to your favorite summer looks. Layer it over a maxi dress, wear it with white pants and a tank or button it up and throw it on with printed shorts. If you really love denim (like, um, me) you can rock the denim-on-denim look by pairing a lighter chambray shirt with some dark denim jeans. Add some leather booties and a scarf and you will look chic and pulled-together in no time!
If it were up to me, I would wear a denim shirt everyday. That’s how much I love the stuff. The fabric is great, the colors are phenomenal and the best part is, you can wear it with nearly everything you own. So hurry while there’s still some summer left and go out and get a chambray shirt. Want to know the best part? You won’t have to pack it up after Labor Day.
