Style Advice of the Week

It is more than likely known that ’90s fashion has made its comeback within the past few years—grunge being one of the most prevalent styles. While on my way into the mall this past week, I came across this Fashionista, and although grunge does not typically appeal to me, I knew I had to stop her and ask if I could take her photos. I have seen many students embodying this trend by tying a plaid shirt around their waist on campus, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to share with you all.

The original ’90s trend typically involved wrapping a plaid shirt around the waist with jeans and either Dr. Martens or Converse. However, fashion is always reinventing itself and with it comes new ways to style old fads. For example, this Fashionista pairs her plaid shirt with a dress and crop top, giving the grunge aesthetic a chic and softer appearance. She adds a denim jacket for a casual touch and keeps her accessories and makeup simple. Keep in mind that not all dresses will work with this style. I suggest bodycon dresses like this one. If you want contrast, try pairing a neutral-colored dress with a colorful plaid top, but if you prefer balance, match your dress color with a similarly colored shirt.

Other ways you can make this trend your own include tying a plaid shirt around either shorts or a skort, another popular revival piece of this past year. This will give the waist a more defined, feminine appearance and draw attention to the skort or shorts. I recommend a neutral-colored skort, such as this one. If you prefer a patterned piece, try this as it mixes not only the popularity of the skort but also the recent tropical theme trend as seen on the runways at Milan Fashion Week spring 2014. These should be paired with a basic T-shirt or sweater for cooler weather, as it’s important to keep it minimalistic. Remember, less is more!

If you want to dress up this style, a pair of wedges or heels will easily add femininity. In contrast, if you prefer a casual variation, pair your outfit with sneakers or flats and a snapback. Additionally, substituting the plaid shirt for a chambray top like this one can create a casual feel to your overall look.
