STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Grandpa’s Closet

In recent years, thrifting for vintage garments that have come back into trend has become all the craze. With the help of Macklemore’s catchy single, “Thrift Shop,” Salvation Army’s and Goodwills everywhere have experienced a surge in consumer traffic and demand. We can all agree that a thrift shop find can be super exhilarating, but even more thrilling is a successful find in your personal vintage vault.

Some people may take “you dress like a grandma” in a bad way, but in my opinion, it is one of the highest compliments a Fashionista/o can be paid. If you take a second to think about it, who can understand the reemergence of past fashion trends better than those who lived through the original trends themselves?

This Fashionista showcases the beauty of a grandpa’s closet find in a simple and effortless way. Incorporating pieces inspired by fashion of the ’80s and ’90s, she is able to create a grunge and carefree ensemble straight out of the “Teenage Dirtbag” music video. The Fashionista has tied a green and navy plaid flannel around her waist; a piece that she found while rummaging through her Grandfather’s closet on a random afternoon. The basic striped crop top from Forever 21 offers a dose of differing pattern and silhouette to the outfit. She also found her high-waisted cut-off shorts at the Goodwill, but admits the flannel was a way more satisfying find. She completes the look with black jewel studs from Kohls, maintaining the grunge while adding a little bit of glam.

The best way to achieve a similar look—and experience— is to search through your parents’ and grandparents’ closets; go through boxes in the garage or attic and try to find pieces that can take your outfit to a whole new level of vintage. If your quest is less successful than you would hope, you can achieve a similar look by shopping for basic pieces inspired by trends from different time periods. Invest in a timeless pair of shoes, like Converse sneakers in a neutral color. Take a walk through the mall and you might be surprised by what unique pieces you can pick up. Also, don’t be discouraged by an unsuccessful trip to a thrift shop or grandpa’s closet; be persistent in your pursuit for funky secondhand treasures because you never know when you might strike gold.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Keep an open mind when it comes to thrifted clothes and hand-me-downs. I can honestly say I’ve gotten better clothes from my older sisters than I’ve ever found in the mall.”
