Remember the days that we’d rock our jean minis to school and be, “like, SO excited”? Think fifth, sixth and seventh grade; those were definitely the days. But where did our knee-length staple item go? As time passed, jean skirts became shorts and then completely out of style. But just like everything else, they’re coming back around!
Last year it was the chambray shirts; this year, it’s the denim skirts. I spotted this Fashionista strutting down the streets of D.C. in her on-trend look, rocking out in her denim skirt. I’m not calling for an all-out return of the original jean skirt, but like this Fashionista, you can wear your denim high-waisted and in all different washes. She works her acid-wash denim skirt with a simple pair of sandals and then adds a pop of color and pattern with her amazing flamingo tank top. To top it off, this Fashionista wears a dainty yet eye-catching necklace to bring a little shine into the look.
Denim can definitely be a frightening material to work with. With chambray shirts, you questioned whether denim on denim was fashionably acceptable (it is). With denim skirts, you just want to know if they even are acceptable. The denim skirt is totally back and better than ever. The best way to wear one is high-waisted so you don’t feel like you’re backsliding to fifth grade. These pieces are perfect for fall due to their thicker material, and they look amazing with a pair of tights and boots. While the weather still hasn’t brought on the fall chill, take this Fashionista’s approach. Tuck in a tank top or wear a crop top loose for a super on-trend look that is perfect for the weekend. For class, throw a slouchy sweater over your tank top and put on some combat boots.
The denim skirt is so versatile due to the many different washes and styles it is made in. It can be dressed up or dressed down, but is always a fashion statement. Invest in a denim skirt— it will be like fifth grade all over again, sans the bullies and braces.
