STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Gear Up for Lace-Ups

Style Advice of the Week

Boots, boots, boots… and more boots. They are the essential part of a Bucknellian’s closet. Weather in Lewisburg, PA has made the boot mandatory for the girl who doesn’t want icicles for toes by the time she reaches the library. Function, however, is not the only advantage boots offer during the cold winter months. Boot season opens the door to making a stylish and fresh appearance on campus. I was really excited to see this Fashionista rock these combat lace-up boots from Steve Madden as opposed to the campus-wide favorite, the knee-high equestrian boot. Paired with tights and a knit dress, the boots created a refreshing look that achieved a casual, edgy vibe appropriate for both the day and night.

What I love about these boots is their versatility. They’re basic enough that they can be worn with anything from pants to dresses and are seasonally neutral enough to be wearable year-round. Styling these combat lace-ups according to your desired look is the key in approaching this trend. If it’s a casual, boho chic vibe you desire, try folding the tops down to make them ankle booties. If it’s a more classic, polished look you’d prefer, lace them up over a pair of skinnies.

Needless to say, combat lace-ups have become my newfound boot crush and luckily, shoe designers around the globe have produced a plethora of stylish versions to choose from. For a more classic and basic look, the Steve Madden ones sported by this Fashionista are perfect. They now come in two new colors, a faded violet purple and muted blue, which can spice up the clean cut. To achieve a moto-inspired look, Steve Madden offers a studded version of this Fashionista’s boot, which you can complete with printed leggings and a leather jacket. For the more adventurous Fashionistas out there, NASTY GAL offers a style of the combat boot that’s super trendy. It’s is aptly named the “Taco Combat Boot.” It features southwest woven paneling on the top and tongue of the boot and silver studded detail along the back. These would look great with slashed jean cut-off shorts, a loose tank, and aviators. These are just some examples of what seems to be hundreds of options you can choose from.

No longer are combat lace-up boots confined to the hipster-inspired closet. Every Fashionista can incorporate this staple piece into her look. My advice: you have tons to gain and nothing to lose by investing in a pair of combat lace-ups!!\
