I have always been a warm weather kind of girl. While fall layering can be an exciting time for fashion, as soon as winter rolls around, I find that it is hard to appreciate style amidst the stinging of frozen ears and frostbitten fingers. When the temperature drops drastically, a certain level of practicality must be assumed in order to fight the frigid air and head across campus to class. That being said, it is possible to stay warm and stylish — The best way to achieve this balance is to find a warm, yet fashionable coat. This Fashionista’s blue coat with a fur-trimmed hood is a prime example of how a little bit of fur can go a long way.
Fur-trimmed coats are a huge trend this winter and I am completely on board. A fur trim takes a basic jacket from bland to chic with the added bonus of extra warmth. These fur-adorned coats have been popping up all over D.C., cloaking all of the capitol’s most fashionable — each with variations reflective of the Fashionista’s unique personality. This fur trim fascination has also been the focus of many fall/winter runway shows. A couple impeccable examples are the Alexander Wang and the BCBGMAXAZRIA fall/winter 2013 collections — both collections covered in stunningly furry frocks, peacoats and parkas.
A fur-trimmed coat can express an interesting assortment of styles. One route a Fashionista can take is to add a touch of old Hollywood glamour with fur-lined cuffs and lapels. I recommend taking a look at Angelina Jolie’s character in the movie The Changeling for some gorgeous 1920s coat inspiration. On the opposite side of the spectrum, a fur-trimmed coat can also help you rock an edgy street style look (think a modern runway-inspired Jenny from the Block). This more casual-cool vibe can be achieved by simply throwing a cute bomber jacket with a big fur-trimmed hood over a T-shirt, printed pants and some high-top sneakers.
Whether your style is more 1920s glamour or edgy hip-hop, a touch of fur on your favorite coat will instantly amp up your winter wardrobe. There is no reason to sacrifice style in order to fight the cold. Follow the lead of Fashionistas around the world, try out a fur-trimmed coat and you will stay both warm and stylish.
