STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: From the Trenches to the Catwalk

Style Advice of the Week

If there is one thing I have learned since residing in the South, it’s that the weather is plain unpredictable. It can be 80 degrees and sunny one minute and 20 degrees cooler and pouring the next. I am 100 percent serious when I say I keep a rain jacket, umbrella, ice scraper and flip flops in my car year round — although the ice scraper may be more for the equally unpredictable New England weather.

I spotted this Fashionista in passing on the way to class and her trench coat immediately caught my attention. It was an overcast morning and she was clearly prepared for the above mentioned South Carolina rain that is known to strike with little to no warning. Typically, rain brings out laziness on the Carolina campus — leggings, oversized sweatshirts, passé rain jackets and some form of a rain boot; however, this Fashionista was prepared for the weather while still appearing casually fashionable.

The basis of this Fashionista’s outfit was all about keeping it casual. She opted for a pair of dark wash denim jeans, a striped boat-neck T-shirt and a modest pair of ballet flats. Although she stuck with a neutral color palate, she added a little pop with the light blue-gray bag. What pulled the outfit together, however, was her trench coat, which stuck with the neutral and classic feel of the outfit while still making a statement. There are endless styles of trench coats to choose from, ranging from pale beige to black; however, several popular, timeless styles include the Burberry London Double-Breasted Cotton Trench, the DKNY Single-Breasted Trench and the MICHAEL Michael Kors Belted Trench. If you want to create more of a statement with your trench coat, opt for a colorful one like the kate spade new york ‘madeline.’

The trench coat is a classic staple that should be a foundation piece in every Fashionista’s closet. From calf-length military jackets to the Burberry Fashion House and post-war life, the trench coat has stood the test of time, proving its worth. It was one of the first masculine looks to be adopted by women and will always add a bit of the runway look to any classic outfit.
