STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: From Dance Class to Dance Clubs

As the weather warms up, students everywhere are ditching the layers and letting their outfits be seen. And, one trend that is making a major move onto Montclair State University’s campus is leotards. They come in all shapes and styles from crew necks, to turtlenecks, plunging necklines and as this Fashionista showcases, the lace-up leotard.

Leotards first became a staple in any Fashionista’s wardrobe in the 1980s, when they were popularized by icons such as Donna Karan. Bright patterned leotards are extremely reminiscent of 1980s fashion. They have been gaining traction again over the past few years and have peaked this season as a spring essential.

Leotards create a long line over the body which is enhanced by the fact that they will never come untucked. They can easily be worn with a skirt for a girly look, but this Fashionista chose to pair it with jeans and booties for an edgier look. The lace-up embroidered detailing helps to elevate this look from basic to bold in the most effortless way.

Spring style typically brings to mind floral patterns and bright colors, a stark contrast from this Fashionista’s dark, solid colors. But the contrast of the edgy black fabric and the delicate lace details creates a unique and enviable look.

Leotards are also extremely versatile. They are no longer just for dance class! Daytime looks such as this one can be easily transitioned into sophisticated nighttime looks. They are the perfect addition to any closet this spring.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I’m a dancer, so leotards have always been a part of my wardrobe. I love that leotards are so versatile and fashionable. I think everyone should use their hobbies and passions as inspiration; it’s an easy way to create your own personal style.”
