STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Folk Fall

The end of the semester is finally here. I am ready to leave for the holidays. This weekend, I made one last stop at the central campus library to collect everything I will need to study during winter vacation. That is where I spotted this photography student, who seems to know how to translate some photography tips, like knowing how to play with proportions and making the elements in your pictures complement each other, into getting dressed.

Among the sea of beanies and puff jackets—yes, we’ve all been there: it’s easy, it’s cozy—she looked fresh and stylish. It is a great example of how to remain warm and comfortable,  and still manage to look put together. I have talked before about how layering needs to be done carefully. You don’t want to look like a walking Christmas tree—too many things going on and no shape at all. This layered look works because the color palette is simple, proportions are done correctly and, even though she is wearing tree standout accessories, they complement each other well. Her outfit also seems great now that we are shifting from fall to winter weather.

This Fashionista is wearing a simple black shirt. On top, she paired a gray, loose cardigan with a printed, long scarf. Playing with proportions, she chose black leggings instead of pants or jeans, and a pair of black combat boots. To complete the look, she wore a black hat with a brown detail and a tote bag with a really cool skull design.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “If you want to accessorize with eye-catching pieces, you have to keep your clothes simple. That is why my shirt, leggings and boots are all black.”
