As spring lines are being released to stores, a trend that I’ve really been seeing are skinny ankle-length pants. To me, the ankle-length is so versatile, but there has always been some controversy around them. How can they be worn without shortening your legs, you ask? Well, it turns out that it’s all about the fit of the pants and the shoes that you pair with them.
If you are feeling like your skinny ankle pants or jeans are making your legs look especially squat, heels will help compensate for the leg-shortening effect. Banana Republic makes a great pair of sleek, “power-stretch” pants in an ankle-length that look very polished, especially with a great pair of heels. The best way to wear ankle pants with heels is by keeping your outfit sleek from head to toe. I would wear a silky button-down shirt tucked into the pants with a colored or metallic belt and maybe even add a fitted blazer. This style would work well in a more professional work setting or to a dressy dinner.
Maybe your legs look great in your ankle-length pants and you don’t feel the need to wear heels to extend them. That’s quite alright! Flats or fashion sneakers can be worn just as easily, especially when paired with a denim ankle pant, like this Fashionista is wearing. A similar style can be found at Madewell in four different washes. A loose or flowing top will look great with the denim and flats. Anthropologie’s website shows an example of the style with Current/Elliott’s Ankle Skinny jeans in ombre and strappy flats.
The most important thing to remember when looking to buy ankle-length pants is FIT, FIT, FIT! This trend only really works when the pants fit you well. When you have that, you can dress them up or dress them down, wear them with heels or sandals or even Converse sneakers.
